Venice Biennale 2027 Timeline for Exhibitors

Official dates for national participations and collateral events, and what has to be technically ready at each step. Taken from La Biennale’s 2027 procedures.

This Venice Biennale timeline for exhibitors collects the official dates of the 20th International Architecture Exhibition (8 May – 21 November 2027) that matter to commissioners, collateral event organisers and production managers. Dates are quoted as written in the procedures; we have not added deadlines that the documents do not state. Between the official milestones we add practical notes from an engineering point of view.

What has to be technically ready by 10 January 2027

  • Final project and layout, with final architectural drawings for collateral events, sent to La Biennale “for due information and verification”.
  • Technical documentation required by local authorities for works outdoors, on water or occupying public space, and for sound or light installations that could interfere with the surrounding urban context. La Biennale uses it to assess feasibility and issue the necessary authorizations.
  • Listed buildings: the exhibition project must also be submitted to the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per il Comune di Venezia e Laguna. The procedures place this “contextually” and do not give a separate date.

Any other authorization from local authorities is the exhibitor’s responsibility: both procedures say the participant must “autonomously proceed” with it.

Working backwards: survey, loads and Soprintendenza file

A final layout for a historic venue rests on measured information. Before 10 January you will normally want:

  • a confirmed venue, listed on the Biennale Noticeboard, checked for suitability (La Biennale does not check it for you);
  • a measured survey, for example a laser scan of the palazzo, with floor levels, spans and openings;
  • weights and footprints of heavy works, and a first floor-load check;
  • layout drawings that respect listed-building limits, ready for the Soprintendenza file.

How long each step takes depends on the venue and the authorities involved, so we plan it case by case rather than with fixed durations.

February to April: execution drawings, safety and logistics

The procedures set no technical milestones between the press deadline (19 February) and the pre-opening. This is when execution drawings are completed, contractors are chosen and, if the install is a construction site, safety coordination (CSP/CSE) and the site safety plan are put in place. See exhibition safety coordination in Italy. Heavy works arriving by boat need their own planning: see moving an exhibition by water in Venice.

Install and pre-opening (6-7 May 2027)

The procedures do not set an install window: the fixed dates are the pre-opening on 6 and 7 May and the public opening on 8 May 2027. Site supervision during install is where the agreed load-spreading, propping and fixing methods are checked against what is actually built.

Closing and removal after 21 November 2027

National participations must run until 21 November 2027, and collateral events should not close before that date. Installations in public spaces must be “promptly dismounted and removed immediately after the closing date” (national participations); collateral events must “guarantee the dismantling and removal of the external works, installations and signage at the end of the event”. Removal is also site work: plan it, and its safety, with the install.

Biennale Arte 2026 de-installation (after 22 November 2026)

Biennale Arte 2026 closes on 22 November 2026, and its collateral events procedure also requires the removal of external works, installations and signage at the end of the event. If you are taking down a 2026 exhibition while preparing for 2027, the same checks on safety, floors and access apply.

What we do and what we don’t do

What we do

  • Laser scan survey and drawings of the venue
  • Engineering of layout and temporary structures, floor-load checks
  • Permit and authority filings, including the Soprintendenza file
  • Safety coordination (CSP/CSE) and site supervision

What we don’t do (we don’t build)

  • No building, fabrication or installation
  • No crews, transport or art handling
  • We work alongside your production company or builder
